While there is a segment of the population that couldn’t care less about the location of Google Shuttle stops, there are a growing number of Google employees (“Googlers”) who appreciate the convenience. Our RealScout offices are located next door to Google here in Mountain View, and the Google Shuttle passes by our office each and every day. We’ve taken note, and are excited to announce the launch of a new search tag called “Near Google Shuttle.”
The Perks of Buying Near a Google Shuttle
If you’re an employee of Google, the perks of finding a home near a Google Shuttle stop are obvious. The ease of commute and the idea that you could completely eliminate the need for a personal vehicle are perhaps two of the biggest. But for those who are not Google employees, what’s the benefit?
Homes near Google Shuttle stops often command a premium over homes in the same areas. Whereas the last generation of dot-commers were interested in expansive properties tucked away behind private gates, the new generation of Internet executives want to bicycle, walk or take the company shuttle to work. The Wall Street Journal spoke with Realtors who call this the “Shuttle Effect,” and who say home values have appreciated as much as 20 percent simply by being located next to a corporate shuttle stop (whether for Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, Apple or others). Even rental rates in these areas have increased, according to the Realtors interviewed.
What is the Google Shuttle?
Google, in an effort to expand green technologies throughout their operations and to make life a bit easier for their employees, has developed a forward-thinking green transportation system that includes biodiesel shuttles and the largest corporate electric vehicle charging infrastructure in the country. Throughout the area, you’ll find thousands of Googlers that are foregoing the driver’s seat and are choosing to commute via Google Shuttle. With more than 275 scheduled daily departures, Google continues to expand shuttle service to neighborhoods throughout the community.
Once on campus, Googlers have access to a fleet of electric vehicles called GFleet, as well as ride-share bicycles to run errands or hop across campus. They’ve also implemented an extensive electric vehicle charging system for those who have their own electric vehicles. According to Google, these efforts have resulted in net annual savings of more than 20,000 metric tons of CO2, which is comparable to taking about 4,000 cars off the road!
Above, the team at RealScout steals Google bikes and goes for a joy ride. Just kidding, no bikes were harmed in the making of this announcement.
